The Last Beatitude

The Beatitudes grow more surprising as Jesus speaks. Blessed are the poor. Blessed are the meek. Blessed are those who mourn. Then Jesus ends with the greatest paradox of all, "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake...rejoice and be glad."

How could persecution possibly be a blessing? Because every Beatitude describes someone who refuses to let anything come between themselves and God. The final Beatitude describes those who won't even let rejection stop them. And for many of us, the greatest obstacle to following Jesus is not suffering, it is the fear of what other people think of us.

Why We Fear Rejection

God created us for relationship. So naturally we care what other people think. We want to be accepted. We want to belong. We want people to admire us rather than reject us. There is nothing sinful about this. The problem comes when our desire for acceptance becomes stronger than our desire to follow Christ. Then we begin to compromise. We stay silent when we should speak. We laugh at what we know is wrong. We hide our faith. We worry more about disappointing people than disappointing God.

That is why Jesus ends the Beatitudes here. Because fear of rejection can quietly become an idol.

One Opinion Matters Most

Human approval has its place. Constructive criticism helps us grow. Encouragement strengthens us. Good friendships are a gift. But human opinion changes constantly. The crowd that praises you today may condemn you tomorrow.

Only God sees the whole truth. Only God knows your heart. Only God knows whether your life has been faithful. If you live for applause, your happiness rises and falls with public opinion. If you live for God, your peace remains no matter what people say.

What Persecution Looks Like Today

Most Christians in America are not imprisoned or killed for their faith. But many experience something quieter. People roll their eyes when we defend marriage. Friends think we're strange because we go to Mass. Family members ignore our efforts to help them grow closer to Christ. Perhaps the greatest persecution today is not violence.

It is indifference. The world simply treats God as irrelevant. Yet Jesus says, "Blessed are you."

If people dismiss you because you faithfully follow Him, you are walking the same road He walked.

Live in the Presence of God

The only way to stop worrying about what everyone else thinks...is to become deeply concerned with what God thinks. And how do we learn what God thinks? By spending time with Him. Begin every morning in prayer. Talk to God from the heart.

Listen to Him in meditation. And do what he tells you in your resolution. Remain aware of His presence throughout the day. When God's voice becomes louder than the world's voice, the opinions of others lose their power. Then you are finally free. Free to love. Free to speak the truth. Free to follow Christ wherever He leads.

And that is why Jesus can say, "Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven."
